OUTRIGGER Waikiki Beach Resort

The iconic home of surf culture — right on the sand of world-famous Waikiki Beach, with Diamond Head on the horizon and Duke's in the lobby.

Some Waikiki hotels simply face the beach. This one grew out of it. The resort stands on the original site of the Outrigger Canoe Club, home of the legendary Waikiki beach boys and Duke Kahanamoku’s stretch of sand — and that heritage still shapes the days here.

Mornings start early at the Voyager 47 Club Lounge, with breakfast and the sun coming up over Diamond Head. Days can be as easy as a surf lesson on the Canoes break, an hour by the oceanfront pool, lunch at the Sunrise Shack, an afternoon along Kalākaua Avenue, then Henry Kapono live at Duke’s on Sunday as the light softens.

For Island Escapes travellers, this is Waikiki with its history intact, and we love it.

The beachfront heart of Waikiki, and the home of surf culture

An iconic 524-room beachfront resort on Kalākaua Avenue, Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii.

Location love

OUTRIGGER Waikiki Beach Resort sits directly on the sand of Waikiki Beach, on the very spot where the Outrigger Canoe Club once stood and where Duke Kahanamoku and the original beach boys taught the world to surf. Its 524 rooms and suites rise over the beach across 16 floors, and almost every one opens onto a private balcony with a city or ocean view.

So much packed into one beachfront address

This is a stay for travellers who want to be in the middle of everything, not away from it. Duke’s Waikiki is right in the lobby, the surf break out front is called Canoes, and Kalākaua Avenue’s shopping, cafés and nightlife begin at the front door, with Diamond Head closing the view to the east.

There is a lot packed into one address. Duke’s Waikiki serves fresh island food and live music on the sand, Blue Note Hawaii runs two shows a night, and Hula Grill looks out over Diamond Head. Grab a bullet coffee and an açaí bowl at the Sunrise Shack, or something quick from Pai’s Deli between swims.

Pure gold for surfers, surf history buffs, shoppers and beach chair aficionados

The surf heritage here is real. Learn to surf or ride an outrigger canoe with the champion Moniz family at Faith Surf School, meet visiting legends through the Surfers in Residence programme, and join daily Hawaiian cultural activities — hula, lei making and ukulele — right at the resort. Guests in Club rooms and suites add the Voyager 47 Club Lounge, with breakfast, sunset pupu and the best beachfront views of any club lounge in Waikiki.

It suits couples, families and first-time Hawaii travellers who want the beach chairs, the buzz and the music close at hand. For Island Escapes travellers, OUTRIGGER Waikiki is definitely the pick when the brief is “I want real Waikiki, outstanding views, right on the beach”.  Done.

The home of surf culture. Loud and proud.

The break out front is called Canoes — one of the few waves in the world you can ride in an outrigger canoe. Faith Surf School, run by the champion Moniz family, teaches right there. Add Duke's Waikiki in the lobby, Blue Note Hawaii's nightly shows and the Voyager 47 Club Lounge above, and you have Waikiki at full volume — social, musical, on the water, and proud of where it stands.
