Some holidays are better shared. Villa Vaihau is a two-bedroom house on the water at Papetoai, on Moorea’s north-west coast, in a quiet gated neighbourhood where every room looks out to the lagoon. The two king bedrooms sit side by side on the ground floor, each with its own bathroom and its own air-conditioning, so nobody draws the short straw. Upstairs, a mezzanine with two single beds and an open-air terrace takes a fifth traveller if you need it.
The lagoon is the front yard. Step out through the garden to the water’s edge, where the villa’s kayaks and canoes are waiting, or swim out to look for turtles and rays. There is a dock for fishing and two moorings. Inside, a compact, well-equipped kitchen with a dining table, dishwasher, oven, microwave and fridge-freezer, plus a washing machine, free fibre WiFi and a safe in each bedroom. A wooden terrace runs off the living area, and the covered Fare Pote’e in the garden is where the long evenings happen.
Then there is the private car. Six days of car hire is included, and on Moorea that changes the whole week. The grocery store is three minutes away and Tiahura beach eight. Cook’s Bay, Opunohu Bay, the Belvedere lookout and the villages along the coast road are yours to take in your own time, and dinner is wherever you decide it is. The villa has its own private car park, so the keys stay in your pocket from the first day to the last ready for island adventuring on a whim.
From 15 December 2026 Air Tahiti Nui flies nonstop from Sydney to Tahiti in 7 hours 15 minutes, leaving at 8.20pm and landing at 6.35am. Six nights fits the timetable neatly, out on a Tuesday and home on a Monday, or Friday to Thursday. Melbourne and Brisbane travellers connect through Sydney on Qantas or Virgin, and it is all in the price.
