Your clever little pause between Tahiti travel transfers
Whether you are arriving from Australia, connecting to Moorea, staying before or after an island-hopping itinerary, or simply want easy access to Papeete Market, cafés, shops and the ferry terminal, these homes and apartments make practical sense.
Instead of transferring straight into a resort or rushing across to the ferry after a long flight, a Papeete city stay gives you breathing room. You can settle in, pick up supplies, explore the market, enjoy dinner nearby and start the next leg of your trip feeling organised.
These properties suit couples, solo travellers, small families and travellers who prefer a more independent base close to the city. Some are right in the heart of Papeete, while others offer a calmer residential feel with quick access to shops, restaurants, the ferry terminal and Faa’a International Airport.
Why Choose a Papeete City Stay?
A Papeete city stay is not about replacing the beach or island resort experience. It is about making the journey work better.
Tahiti is the international gateway to French Polynesia. Staying in or near Papeete can be useful at the start or end of a trip, especially when flights, ferry times, luggage, children or onward travel plans need a little more breathing space.
It is also a good choice for travellers who like having markets, cafés, shops and transport close by. You can walk to local conveniences from some apartments, drive quickly to the airport or ferry terminal from others, and enjoy a more local view of Tahiti Island before heading further afield.

How do I get to Papeete from Australia?
Australian travellers reach Papeete by flying into Faa’a International Airport (PPT), also known as Tahiti International Airport, located near Papeete on the island of Tahiti. At present, most Australian itineraries route via Auckland, with onward flights from Auckland to Papeete operated by Air New Zealand and Air Tahiti Nui. The Auckland-to-Papeete flight is approximately 5 hours.
From Australia, travellers usually fly from cities such as Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or other major Australian airports to Auckland, then connect through to Papeete. Total travel time will vary depending on the Australian departure city and connection time in Auckland.
A new direct Sydney–Papeete service has also been announced by Air Tahiti Nui, with flights planned to begin from 14 December 2026, operating twice weekly. This will make travel from Australia to Tahiti much simpler once the route is operating.
Once you arrive at Faa’a International Airport, Papeete city is close by. Travellers can continue by taxi, private transfer, rental car or arranged hotel/accommodation transfer. Qantas notes that Papeete Airport offers access to taxis, buses, ferries, hotel shuttles, private transfers and car hire, and that the airport is around 5 km southwest of Papeete.
For guests staying in a Papeete City Stay, this makes arrival straightforward. These apartments and homes are well-suited to travellers who want to land, rest, visit the market, connect to the Moorea ferry, or spend a night or two in Tahiti before continuing to another island.
Island Escapes can assist with international flights, Auckland connections, Papeete transfers, ferry planning and accommodation, so your Tahiti stopover or city stay fits neatly into the wider itinerary.
