What do you do when you mix tapa cloth, face painting and traditional Fijian song & dance with the unbridled joy of a bunch of kids ages 3-12 years? Some of Castaway Island’s proudest parents !

In March my family and I had the privilege of visiting Castaway Island, Fiji. I say privilege because it was not only beautiful but also so welcoming.   Kids club was a particular highlight for my two girls (and given that it operates from 9am to 10pm daily, an even bigger highlight for my husband and I!). Learning lots of interesting Fijian facts and a few words was fun. As was watching the Lovo pit being dug, making coconut toffee with the coconuts they’d gathered, collecting and racing crabs and the best part….the Meke.

Iva at Kids Club taught all the children traditional Fijian dance and songs, even the toddlers!  And on the evening of the hosted Management Cocktail Party we were all treated to a wonderful performance by the children. Dressed in traditional costumes with the staff, the children all happily sang and danced for us.  And what a treat it was!  Surrounded by parental paparazzi, 1000’s of pictures were taken of the Brave Warrior Boys and Fijian Dancing Girls. Every parent was so delighted and touched, and the joy that exuded from the children was infectious. My normally shy 9 year old girls were dancing with Iva and the other kids, smiling and waving to the adoring (and terribly proud) crowd.  It was priceless!

It’s opportunities like this and the memories that are created around them, that are the reason that we take our kids on family holidays.  They are such special family experiences….in this instance a special family Fijian experience.  We can’t recommend a family holiday at Castaway Island more highly….actually I’m not sure we’ll ever get our girls to go anywhere else!!
